The North Charleston Fire Department is looking for some new employees after getting the go-ahead to accept grant money for new firefighters.
Thursday night, North Charleston City Council approved the department to accept more than $1.8 million. The grant is a part of FEMA's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program and will allow for the hiring of 15 new firefighters.
The grant would pay for two years of salary and some fringe benefits. If the personnel is a veteran, the grant will extend for an additional 12 months. The city council would the have to vote to continue funding the positions.
New firefighters would work on ladder trucks in the city.
Officials say they are ready to start the hiring process immediately and have received more than 200 local applications already.
