Witnesses say they heard numerous pops of gunfire during, what police describe, as a routine traffic stop around 11:40pm Monday night. The suspect fatally shot in the officer involved shooting was 22-year old Travis Miller of Summerville. The Charleston County Coroner's Office says he died from multiple gun shot wounds.
The traffic stop was on a BMW off Remount at Dakota Street. Hanahan Police Chief Mike Cochran said there were four people inside 3 of them had outstanding warrants.
Cochran says the officer waited for backup and then began to approach the vehicle. Those in the car were notified they would be frisked and that is when Miller took off. "At some point there was gunfire exchanged…The subject went into a wooded area and at the point in time the vegetation was kind of thick so our officers backed off."
Investigators say because the woods were so thick they waited for more officers to arrive on the scene. About 20-minutes had passed when the search resumed; they then found the suspect who was deceased roughly 100-yards from where the car was stopped.
Chief Cochran said Miller ban to shoot first as he was running away and that is when police fired back. Investigators say Miller was found with a gun. "He ultimately had a firearm on him which would be a good reason why he didn't want to be patted-down."
Police say the other three suspects were arrested at the scene. Robert Terrell Holmes, the driver is charged with disorderly conduct and simple possession of marijuana. Denzel Jermaine Washington was wanted by the Charleston County Sheriff's office for contempt of court and failure to appear on a bench warrant. Brittany Nicole Fleck was wanted by North Charleston Police for failure to appear on a marijuana arrest. She is also charged with simple possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct.
Chief Cochran said that South Carolina Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. And the officer involved has been put on administrative leave, a routine procedure in such cases.
