Charleston County Superintendent Nancy McGinley resigns

During an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon the Charleston County School Board accepted the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley.  Michael Bobby was appointed interim superintendent.

McGinley will receive her salary and benefits through June 2015.

McGinley was criticized after firing Academic Magnet's head football coach, Bud Walpole, for an "inappropriate" celebration involving a watermelon. The celebration, which brought complaints from many, involved chanting and the smashing of watermelons decorated with a caricature face.  McGinley removed Walpole from his coaching duties only to reinstate him two days later.

Members of the NAACP, the National Action Network, and Bonds Wilson Alumni held a press conference Thursday morning to challenge the actions of the board. WATCH the press conference here.

McGinley is the district's longest-serving superintendent, holding the position since 2007.
