Authorities identify victims found submerged in vehicle on Stono River

Investigators say three people have been found dead in a car found submerged in the Stono River in Charleston County.

Charleston County dispatchers confirm, a submerged vehicle has been found at the St. Johns Yacht Harbor on the Stono River.

Authorities said someone reported a wrecked car in the river at the state Highway 700 bridge near Johns Island around 7:45 a.m. Thursday.

The vehicle was found submerged in Penny Creek.

The Charleston County Coroner's office released the names of the three victims: 50-year-old Don Dent; 38-year old Mary Wesley Simmonds; and 38-year-old Allyson Key.

The coroner says the cause of death for all three is consistent with drowning.

Family members have been on scene and visible and understandably shaken and upset. Chaplains have been on hand to help them.

Charleston City Police have not released any additional information.
